Healing Cuisine of China or Finding Your Way to Say Goodbye

Healing Cuisine of China: 300 Recipes for Vibrant Health & Longevity

Author: Zhuo Zhao

A comprehensive guide to the Chinese art of healing with food

• Provides more than 300 authentic Chinese recipes for curing specific ailments and for promoting happiness and vitality

• Explains the theories behind traditional Chinese beliefs about health and diet and reconciles these beliefs with contemporary Western medical knowledge

• Includes a complete fitness program centered on the popular Chinese qi gong exercises

Through 5,000 years of recorded history the Chinese have developed an unequaled pharmacopoeia of food remedies and have turned this knowledge into a delicious cuisine that is simple to prepare. This cuisine has little in common with the dishes on the menus of many Chinese restaurants--which have sacrificed traditional Chinese principles to appeal to high-fat Western tastes. Instead, it emphasizes all-natural ingredients eaten in season and in the most beneficial combinations.

The Healing Cuisine of China features more than 300 authentic Chinese recipes, ranging from simple preparations to cure specific ailments to traditional "longevity banquets." The authors also explain the underlying theories behind traditional Chinese beliefs about health and reconcile these ancient beliefs with Western medical knowledge about bacteria, viruses, and other causes of disease. A complete fitness program, centered on the popular Chinese qi gong exercises, and a questionnaire to help readers discover their individual body requirements make this the most comprehensive guide to the healthy lifestyle of China ever published.

Depressed Child: A Parent's Guide for Rescuing Kids

Author: Douglas A Riley

By emphasizing how parents can talk to their children about thoughts and feelings, exploring how children develop negative beliefs about themselves, and teaching parents how to help their children change those hopeless self-perceptions, this book outlines practical methods that parents and children together can use to find solutions to the dark thoughts that plague so many young people today.

Publishers Weekly

Clinical psychologist Riley (The Defiant Child) tackles a difficult subject with aplomb in this keenly insightful guide for parents. "For children and adolescents, the depressive state makes them feel like astronauts whose tethers have been cut, and they are drifting in space," he writes. He not only explains how to identify the symptoms of depression and the "negative beliefs" "no one will ever like me," "I am made of inferior stuff," "death is an option," and so on that are so often at its core, but also provides tools for what he terms "Planning the Rescue Mission." Ten brief but thorough chapters cover the most common negative beliefs that trigger depression and such companion problems as substance abuse, prematurely intense relationships (what he calls "miniature marriages") that blindside adolescents when they come to an end, and suicide. Riley illustrates each point with case studies that offer readers a chance to learn from his dialogues with his patients. He suggests strategies for everything from closing "the physical distance between you and your child" in order to soothe and encourage them, to some particular lines of questioning for uncovering negative beliefs, to the crucial, often overlooked act of listening ("your ears cannot be fully open until your mouth is fully shut"). He also discusses when to seek professional help and how to step in swiftly and effectively in the case of a suicidal child. Riley's advice is commonsensical and sound, and the concrete tools he offers in this slim, practical volume provide a lifeline to parents of any child struggling with depression. (Mar.) Library Journal

Children and teens are increasingly being diagnosed as depressive--perhaps because modern life is becoming more challenging or possibly because treatments that have proven effective for adults also work well for children. A staff physician with the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, Kaufman presents a good primer on treating teen depression. All of the major topics are covered in clear-cut language: how to find a therapist, possible treatments (including therapy and drug treatments, as well as alternative remedies), suicide prevention, and treatment of related substance abuse and anxiety disorders. Recommended if your library doesn't own Gerald D. Oster and Sarah S. Montgomery's Helping Your Depressed Teenager: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers (Wiley, 1994). The Depressed Child, on the other hand, is not recommended. Riley, a clinical psychologist, offers some interesting suggestions here and there (e.g., the importance of hugging a depressed child), but his idea that a parent should undertake to "rescue" a child who is suicidal or hallucinating is irresponsible. Such kids need professional help. David G. Fassler and Lynne S. Dumas's "Help Me, I'm Sad": Recognizing, Treating, and Preventing Childhood and Adolescent Depression (Viking, 1997) is a better recent title. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Meaningful Scents Around the World or The Diabetic Traveler

Meaningful Scents Around the World

Author: Roman Kaiser

In recent years, our knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of olfaction has grown enormously, accompanied by a growing appreciation of scent. This is reflected in the fact that the 2004 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of 'Odorant Receptors and the Organization of the Olfactory System'. This book naturally supports such developments, and takes the reader on a fascinating fragrant journey around the world to some of the exciting places the author has visited during his 30 years of olfactory research. Following an introductory section to the world of natural scents, including their biological meaning and history, the fragrance and flavor chemist, Roman Kaiser, who is renowned for his 'headspace' analytical technique, revisits some memorable scents. In doing so, he leads us to such exotic places as Lower Amazonia, Papua New Guinea, India, and many rain-forest biotopes in his quest for new molecules and new scent concepts, showing us along the way how a scent like tatami can be linked to culture. The third and final section describes the analysis of the compositions of the presented scents.

Speaking of Sadness or 101 Tips for Diabetes Self Management Education

Speaking of Sadness: Depression, Disconnection, and the Meanings of Illness

Author: David Allen Karp

"Even though depression has periodically made me feel that my life was not worth living, has created havoc in my family, and sometimes made the work of teaching and writing seem impossible," writes David Karp, "by some standards, I have been fortunate." Indeed, depression can be devastating, leading to family breakups, loss of employment, even suicide. And it is a national problem, with some ten to fifteen million Americans suffering from it, and the number is growing. In Speaking of Sadness, Karp captures the human face of this widespread affliction, as he illuminates his experience and that of others in a candid, searching work.
Combining a scholar's care and thoroughness with searing personal insight, Karp brings the private experience of depression into sharp relief, drawing on a remarkable series of intimate interviews with fifty depressed men and women. By turns poignant, disturbing, mordantly funny, and wise, Karp's interviews cause us to marvel at the courage of depressed people in dealing with extraordinary and debilitating pain. We hear what depression feels like, what it means to receive an "official" clinical diagnosis, and what depressed persons think of the battalion of mental health experts--doctors, nurses, social workers, sociologists, psychologists, and therapists--employed to help them. We learn the personal significance that patients attach to beginning a prescribed daily drug regimen, and their ongoing struggle to make sense of biochemical explanations and metaphors of depression as a disease. Ranging in age from their early twenties to their mid-sixties, the people Karp profiles reflect on their working lives and career aspirations, and confidestrategies for overcoming paralyzing episodes of hopelessness. They reveal how depression affects their intimate relationships, and, in a separate chapter, spouses, children, parents, and friends provide their own often-overlooked point of view. Throughout, Karp probes the myriad ways society contributes to widespread alienation and emotional exhaustion.
Speaking of Sadness is an important book that pierces through the terrifying isolation of depression to uncover the connections linking the depressed as they undertake their personal journeys through this very private hell. It will bring new understanding to professionals seeking to see the world as their clients do, and provide vivid insights and renewed empathy to anyone who cares for someone living with the cruel unpredictability of depression.

Library Journal

This sociological consideration of illness and disease in contemporary America comes from a professor (Boston Coll.) who uses his own suffering, treatment, and theory along with reports of 50 others who volunteered to talk with him about their major depressive episodes. Karp writes well, addressing psychological, chemical, and cultural perspectives, with much credit to C. Wright Mills, Erving Goffman, and Arthur Kleinman. Many psychiatrists would agree that too little attention is paid to the nature of the pain and the impact of social context on our definitions of normality and treatment. "Self-help" comes under fire, too, as shallow ideology in a time of advancing anomie. A careful, honest writer, Karp has produced a classic equal to William Styron's Darkness Visible (LJ 8/90) and Clifford Beers's A Mind That Found Itself (1908). Highly recommended for sufferers, would-be healers, and anyone interested in the effects of depression.-E. James Lieberman, George Washington Univ. Sch. of Medicine, Washington, D.C.

Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food

Author: Jan Chozen Bays

Here is an accessible and encouraging exploration of how and why to apply the Zen art of mindfulness to transform our “issues” with food. Whether we are overweight (as are two-thirds of American adults today) or suffer from an eating disorder, learning to eat mindfully can liberate us from the suffering we experience with food. Practiced for centuries in the Zen tradition, mindful eating is an approach that involves bringing one’s full attention to the process of eating—becoming fully present to the tastes, smells, thoughts, and feelings that arise during a meal. Preliminary research funded by the National Institutes of Health indicates that mindfulness is effective in treating eating disorders.

Dr. Bays, a physician and Zen teacher, offers a wonderfully clear presentation of what mindfulness is and how it can help us create a healthier relationship with food. In Mindful Eating she shows us how to rediscover the simple act of eating, thereby gaining control of our eating problems from the inside out. Along the way she reviews the relevant research, offers medical information, and presents numerous practical exercises drawn from her workshops. Through mindful eating we not only overcome our issues with food, but we can reawaken our sense of pleasure and satisfaction. This book shows us how.

The Straight Path of the Spirit: Ancestral Wisdom and Healing Traditions in Fiji

    Author: Richard Katz

The inspiring story of one man's exploration of indigenous healing in a culture fighting to preserve its spiritual health.

    • A firsthand account of a little-known healing tradition.

    • A dramatic story of self-transformation by a well-respected Harvard-educated anthropologist.

In the late 1970s Richard Katz, a clinical psychologist trained in anthropology, spent two years living in a remote island community in Fiji, hoping to record the practices of its healers. At the foundation of their healing, he discovered, was the concept of the straight path, a journey through life whose truth is revealed only to the extent that it is searched for with honesty and faith. It is a way of healing that in its very essence is a way of living, a path that emphasizes the spiritual dimensions of health and the relevance of these to the community. But while interviewing healers at work, Katz was drawn into an increasingly suspenseful drama. Unexplained deaths, rumors and suspicions, and the intrusion of a zealous evangelist rocked the village and soon revealed to the author the dangerous alternative to the straight path: the misuse of power that some call witchcraft.

The Straight Path is an engrossing story of indigenous healers and a dramatic account of cultures in collision. Through the story of his own self-transformation, Katz reveals not only those aspects of life essential for the Fijians as they struggle to hold onto their identity, but also what is of importance to all of us who seek to retain our humanity.

    American Herb Association

His presentation is in the academic style of the psychologist and anthroplogist that he is, yet he makes the book readable and engaging.

    What People Are Saying

    Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
This is no New-Age vapor, but a sensitive, penetrating insight into a deeply mysterious aspect of humanity that has no parallel in Western culture. Katz was blessed by the Fijians, and imparts his blessing to us. (Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Harmless People and Reindeer Moon)

Mental Retardation or In the Pursuit of Winning

Mental Retardation: Nature, Cause, and Management

Author: George S Baroff

Mental Retardation, now in the third edition, was hailed as a "classic" when it was first published in the 1970's. This edition provides up-to-date material on the major dimensions of mental retardation-its nature, its causes, both biological and psychological, and its management.

Mani Pavuluri

This is a comprehensive book on mental retardation in which the presentation, etiology, and management are outlined. An added unique feature in this third edition is a series of potential discussion questions at the end of each chapter. The reference list has benn expanded to include the most recent publications. This book is particularly readable and includes well-organized details in all areas that are relevant for mental retardation. Authors intend to highlight "person." They have met their objectives in providing accurate information on the most recent definitions of mental retardation, biopsychosocial variables, and the obstacles and rewards in treating mental retardation. According to the authors, this book is written for upper level undergraduate and graduate students and for the professionals in the field. I agree that it will be of immense interest to those in the fields of psychology, child psychiatry, pediatrics, education, and social services. Both the senior author and the guest author have extensive experience in the field of mental retardation and it is a treat to get a distilled version of their experience in the form of a readable textbook. Definitions, biological factors, and environmental factors are all well covered. Psychiatric disorders and mental retardation, comprehensive services, and support services are well covered for all age groups, severity, and in various settings. Authors have covered all the key concepts related to mental retardation. This book has all there is to learn on the topic. While the medical management of various behavior/psychiatric problems is mentioned in some detail, the presentation lacks a systematic approach. This, however, isa small detail compared to the rich detail in other areas.

Both the senior author and the guest author have extensive experience in the field of mental retardation and it is a treat to get a distilled version of their experience in the form of a readable textbook.
Features: Definitions, biological factors, and environmental factors are all well covered. Psychiatric disorders and mental retardation, comprehensive services, and support services are well covered for all age groups, severity, and in various settings.
Assessment: Authors have covered all the key concepts related to mental retardation. This book has all there is to learn on the topic. While the medical management of various behavior/psychiatric problems is mentioned in some detail, the presentation lacks a systematic approach. This, however, is a small detail compared to the rich detail in other areas.

In the Pursuit of Winning: Problem Gambling Theory, Research and Treatment

Author: Masood Zangeneh

Gambling is an underrecognized problem from both a clinical and a public health point of view. It is not uncommon for an adolescent or adult to participate in one form of gambling or another on a regular basis, be it the lottery, card playing for money, sports wagering, or gambling on electronic gaming devices. Nor is it uncommon for such participation to reach excessive or destructive proportions, with negative effects on the individual's psychological, social, economic, and family life. The results of the National Research Council's 2000 review of empirical studies suggest that 85% of adolescents report having gambled during their lifetime, with 73% of adolescents reporting having gambled in the past year. Despite gains in knowledge concerning the correlates and risk factors associated with severe gambling problems among youth during the past ten years, a general lack of public and parental awareness exists. This raises serious mental health and public policy concerns.

Written from an international perspective, this book covers gambling research and interventions in the following categories: role of helpline services; a Jungian–transpersonal approach to treatment; cognitive therapy for problem gambling; pharmacological interventions for problem gambling; desensitization/biofeedback as treatment for problem gambling; binge gambling; pathological gambling; past and contemporary aboriginal peoples' experiences with gambling; problem–gambling counselor certification; measurement of outcomes in problem gambling treatment; overview of teen gambling–related issues from leading researchers.

Reviewer: Lisa Stepp, PhD, RN, APN, AOCN, CRNH (Private Practice)
Description: End-of-life care continues to be a very challenging area of medical care. Authors continue to explore and report on the evolution of caring for individuals and their loved ones during this difficult time. This book continues an emerging tradition of disseminating information to clinicians regarding end-of-life care.
Purpose: This book has been specifically designed to help clinicians overcome their own feelings of distress and provide quality care during difficult times. Although certain symptomatology is common for hospice and palliaitve care patients, each situation requires its own form of individualized intervention. The authors' attention to detail provides a framework in which the clinician can design and implement this individualized care.
Audience: Due to the tone, writing style, and vocabulary of this book, the most appropriate audience is clinicians involved in and those preparing to practice in the hospice and palliative care arena. The authors and editors are well respected in the field of end-of-life care.
Features: The book is divided into three main areas, preparing for the transfer of the patient to end-of-life care, common symptomatology, and ethical dilemmas in end-of-life care. The section on physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia is of particular interest. The authors approach this sensitive topic in a very compassionate, straightforward manner.
Assessment: To date, there have been numerous articles, journals, and books produced to address the issues that patients, caregivers, and clinicians face at the end of life. The overlapping of information can be seen however in most cases as unavoidable. This book is well written and accurately reflects the state of end-of-life care in America.
